Circle the Square

Saturday, September 12, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

CACHE in Medford invites the community to tune in to an innovative, robust series of virtual events during Circle the Square 2020.

CACHE will turn the Circle the Square Facebook page into a virtual “Medford Square,” with primary live productions between 1 and 5 p.m. Events will happen both on the main page, as well as simultaneously on the Facebook pages and websites of other Medford cultural organizations. The primary stream of live performances will also be aired on Medford Community Media, both online and on TV.

The “main stage” performances on the Circle the Square Facebook page will kick off at 1 p.m. with live music by singer-songwriter Erica Leigh and guitarist Sean Peters. Then, Sheryl Bailey and Rick McLaughlin will share some jazz, followed by Bluesy-rock singer Jen Truesdale and guitarist Joe Musella. Lovely Singer Lydia Harrell will round out the musical sets. Between each musician will be an interlude of pre-recorded performances, including a viewing of the movie short “Color Red Only”; a video of the “Peace Train” music project with Laura Brereton, Raleigh Green, and various local musicians; stand-up comedy with Sam Ike; and a dance performance by The Dance Studio.

Visit other sites and Facebook pages to view pre-recorded and live programs by many of Medford’s popular cultural organizations. The Mystic Makerspace will provide live virtual craft activity using cardboard toilet paper rolls. Step back in time and watch a recording of “Letters to Medford” the Medford Historical Society’s highly popular production that appeared live in 2016 based on real letters gathered at the Mystic River Celebration in 2013. Join the Medford Public Library for a live story-time for kids ages 4-6, the Royall House and Slave Quarters will host a historical presentation, the Medford Family Network will present a concert with Alastair Moock, and South Medford’s SwapIt will provide a live Styling for Women webinar. You can also take part in a Story Walk from Medford Family Network, and take a tour of the Medford Arts Council’s painted electrical boxes around the city, and play the Friends of the Chevalier Theatre’s Trivia Game to help celebrate the 80th anniversary of this Medford institution.

The day also will include art exhibits at the following venues: Colleen’s of Medford Square (Jerome Street Studios), Condon Music Shell (Mandalas Over the Mystic), Goldilox Bagels (Adam Lorusso), Members Plus Credit Union (Mike Saporito), Middlesex Federal Savings (Debbie Corleto), Mystic Coffee Roaster (Louise Musto-Choate), Mystic Valley Travel (Nancy Haddad), Real Gusto (Sharon Fischer), ReMax Andrew Realty Services (Sarah Gerould), Salvatore’s Medford Square (Earl Howard), SckyArt Photography (Ed Cardini), and Washvault Lab (Susan Altman).

The Medford Community Coalition will be hosting a photo contest for your best photos of what “Medford Means to You” (entry deadline is September 10), and Medford artist Jennifer Cheng DesAutels and Urban Sketchers Boston will be conducting a sketch-along and virtual exhibit spotlighting Medford Square.

And this wouldn’t be Circle the Square without a scavenger hunt. Take part in the “Paint by Numbers” scavenger hunt by downloading our images from the CACHE website or Facebook page and looking for our signs in the windows of Medford Square businesses to find out what color goes with each number. Color in your picture and email a copy to circlethesquaremedford@gmail.com to be eligible to win prizes.

After live presentations wrap up, head out to a Medford restaurant to pick up dinner for your family, and enjoy an outdoor movie showing at Salvatore’s in Medford Square.
