Jeremy Eichler on the Babi Yar Symphony

Monday, March 25, 2019 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Free

After the Second World War, the Soviet Union suppressed the memory of the Jewish massacre at Babi Yar and attempted to erase the site itself from the landscape.

In this program, Jeremy Eichler, Public Scholar at the National Endowment for the Humanities and Classical Music Critic of The Boston Globe, charts both the earliest attempts at forced amnesia as well as the highly fraught creation of Shostakovich’s Thirteenth Symphony, a “musical monument” that broke the official silence.

This event is sponsored by the Program for Public Humanities at Tisch College and the Tufts Department of Music.

Free; no tickets required. Guest parking passes can be purchased at the Tufts Police Department, 419 Boston Avenue, Medford
