Sanfilippo syndrome is a genetic error of metabolism. It is a mucopolysaccharidoses, an MPS disorder, MPSlll. Mucopolysaccharides are long chains of sugar molecules that are used in building connective tissues. When the body is finished using these molecules, it breaks them down, with enzymes, and disposes of them. Children with Sanfilippo syndrome are missing or are deficient in the enzyme to break down the molecules. Instead, the body stores these molecules in the cells. This storage causes progressive damage. More information is available on the Team Sanfillipo Foundation website.
Phunk Phenomenon Dance Complex is a new nontraditional dance studio. Its mission is to reach out to today’s youth through the art of urban dance, which has always been the heart of inner cities as a way of expression and a means of building self-esteem. Hip-hop is not just a dance but also a culture containing five elements. Phunk Phenomenon’s goal is to educate students on those five elements. Instructors not only teach choreography but also the history behind each art form.
