Tufts University Art Galleries presents Chantal Zakari, Professor of the Practice in Graphic Arts, for a lunchtime talk titled “Democratizing the Art Object: Navigating Self-Publishing.” Zakari is an interdisciplinary artist, designer, and art educator. In her work she draws upon contemporary social issues by making connections through personal narratives, history, and popular culture. She will trace self-publishing’s origins from a subversive act by artists in the 1960s, through the digital revolution of the 1990s, to mass customization in the 21st century. Her talk will use examples from “Bookworks,” an exhibition drawing on contemporary artists’ books on display at Aidekman Arts Center through December 15.
