A Secret Chord: The Spiritual Songs of Leonard Cohen
Wednesday, June 26, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
FreeThe Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen’s most well-loved and ubiquitous work is his 1984 song “Hallelujah.” It tells of a frail and broken King David looking for hope and redemption in music and prayer, and it has one of the most hauntingly beautiful choruses ever penned. The song has been covered by dozens of artists, and has been featured in many films, television shows, and other reviews. It has entered into the English language canon as one of the rare “secular hymns,” joining the ranks of great works like “Let There Be Peace on Earth,” the Beatles’ “Let It Be,” and Pete Seeger’s “Turn, Turn, Turn.”
This summer, on select Wednesdays at 7 p.m., First Baptist Church of Medford will look at Cohen’s “Hallelujah” in addition to many of his other songs on religious topics and biblical themes.
Additional sessions will be held on July 31 and August 28. All take place in the church’s Memorial Hall and are free and open to all; no reservations required.
