Medford’s Compass Points: South Medford
Tuesday, May 23, 2023 @ 1:00 pm
FreeHistorian Dee Morris continues her four-part series, “Medford’s Compass Points,” in which she discusses the city’s four “cardinal point” neighborhoods. Today’s focus will be on South Medford. Following Main Street from Medford Square and going past the 18th-century Royall House and Slave Quarters, you quickly arrive in the heart of South Medford. This densely populated neighborhood sits on a level plain except for the gradual rise of Winter Hill. Here in the 1880s, Mystic Trotting Park offered exciting harness races that attracted thousands on a sunny July day. Now, streets named Bonner, Golden and Hicks commemorate horse owners. Another section, the home of Tufts University, features roads with Ivy League names. By the 1920s, Italian Americans from the North End were owning compact homes with tiny gardens. Pizza became a South Medford tradition! Remaining presentations in the series (all on Tuesdays) will be East Medford on June 27, and West Medford on July 18. Reserve your seat by calling the Senior Center at 781-396-6010.
