Pianist and composer Joel LaRue Smith presents, “Pasajes: An Afro Latin Musical Odyssey,” a concert of original Latin Jazz compositions. The complexity and profundity of Latin American music illustrates its significant relation to jazz and music of the African diaspora. In bringing Afro Latin Jazz to Tufts, Smith — a faculty member and director of the Tufts Jazz Orchestra — attempts to establish a social context of the contributions that this music has made on influencing the landscape of popular American culture by breaking stereotypes and fostering dialogues as powerful tools toward “reconditioning” and changing the conversation about social justice.
