Sound on Mystic Launch
Saturday, May 15, 2021 @ 9:00 am
FreeToday marks the launch of Sound on Mystic, an outdoor audio installation combining sound art, music, spoken word, and ambience into an immersive experience. It is located along a two-mile stretch of the Mystic River in Medford and Arlington and is accessed through ECHOES, a free mobile app that uses GPS data to cue different sounds at various sites.
After downloading the app, you can put on a pair of headphones, take a walk within the installation’s extensive boundaries, and hear a diverse set of sound works that are all united by the river itself, and its complex legacy as a place of history and nature, community and conflict, labor and recreation.
The installation includes 14 newly commissioned works in a variety of styles, created by these different artists from around New England: Oliver Caplan, Terry E. Carter, Michael Dewberry, Jazz Dottin, Erin Genia, Joanna Hay, Derek Hixon, Sarah Kanouse, Balla Kouyaté, Charles Shadle, Wanda Strukus, Thread Ensemble (Abigale Reisman, Rachel Panitch and Andria Nicodemou), Asher Tuil and Billy Wirasnik.
Sound on Mystic is created by Ian Coss, Dwayne Johnson and Gary Roberts, with funding from the Medford Arts Council and Arlington Cultural Council, and support from the Mystic River Watershed Association.
Visit the Sound on the Mystic page on the Medford Arts Council website for much more information, including a link to download the app: https://www.medfordartscouncil.org/sound-on-mystic
