Tufts University presents The Either/Orchestra, one of New England’s premier jazz ensembles, with special guest Teshome Mitiku. Led by saxophonist/composer Russ Gershon, the 10-piece, horn-heavy group is known for its wide-ranging vision of jazz, often incorporating pop, Latin and Ethiopian music in fresh ways. Teshome Mitiku was among the 1960s generation of Ethiopian singers who helped create a new music in that country, synthesizing American influences with traditional Ethiopian sounds. His band, the Soul Ekos, were among the biggest stars in East Africa before he was exiled during the regime of Haile Selassie, and his songs are still beloved by Ethiopians around the world. Together they have appeared in Boston and New York and have headlined the Chicago Jazz Festival.
