Tuesdays with MARV: U.S./Mexico Border Photography
Tuesday, June 30, 2020 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
FreeMedford Arts Center, Inc. invites you to the third edition of “Tuesdays with MARV,” a new program featuring local artists and their work using MACI’s beloved Medford Arts Resource Vehicle. Join photographer Robert Castagna as he discusses his ongoing photographic project on the borderlands of the U.S. and Mexico.
The U.S./Mexican borderlands could be considered a hauntingly beautiful place if the scars of humanity were not so deep. One is reminded of a prison on the one hand, a cemetery on the other. The ghosts of asylum seekers and migrants are omnipresent through the carefully placed crosses and memorials that line the Mexican side. There seems to always be a storm on the horizon, be it a monsoon or a political one. Recently the American wall was festooned with barbed wire while in Mexico murals abound directly on the border fence. This program will explore why Robert chose to photograph the border, which he feels is “an artificial line that culture and humanity are forced to navigate.”
Robert Castagna is a professional event photographer based in Boston. His work can be found in the permanent collection of the Boston Public Library, Art Complex Museum, “Harvard Square: An Illustrated History,” and numerous other publications. He has worked with nonprofit organizations such as the Border Community Alliance and Voices from the Border and pictures include those seeking asylum and street scenes of life and art along the border wall in both Mexico and the U.S.
