Tufts Sunday Concert: Thomas Stumpf
Sunday, October 7, 2018 @ 3:00 pm
FreeThe Tufts Sunday Concert Series presents “To Charm with Sorrow,” a piano recital by Tufts University faculty member Thomas Stumpf.
The title of the program is taken from the novella “Soul” by the great Russian author Andrey Platonov. Tufts composer John McDonald found the quote and promptly wrote four short pieces for Stumpf to perform. These form the bookends for the program, which also includes two fantasies by Yehudi Wyner, and the world premieres of works by Kareem Roustom and Stumpf.
Stumpf’s works involve two extraordinary guest artists also from the Tufts faculty: saxophonist Philipp Stäudlin and violist Scott Woolweaver.
The program is rounded out by piano music of the 19th century: works by Schubert, Brahms, Fanny Mendelssohn, and Chopin (the well-known and much-loved Ballade in G minor).
