Mapping Medford: Medford Walking Tours Through History
Join Lani O’Donnell, Office Manager at the Medford Historical Society & Museum, for an introduction to the new mapping resources and walking tours now available on the MHSM website. She will demonstrate how to use these new resources and explain how the new maps incorporate history into the everyday through descriptions and photos. Nothing But a Tiger: The Portraits of Lydia Maria Child
As part of the exhibit "Lydia Maria Child: Author & Abolitionist," Boston University faculty member Kyna Hamill will survey the many portraits made of Lydia Maria Child over her lifetime, and how she was enthusiastic to have her likeness made by popular artists working in various media such as painting, silhouette, daguerreotype and photography. See all four of Child's portraits together for the first time. Refreshments to follow.

In conjunction with Circle the Square, the Medford Historical Society and Museum will have special weekday hours for visitors to view its currenty major exhibit, "Lydia Maria Child: Author & Abolitionist." Child, a Medford-born daughter of a baker, was one of the most important writers and activists in nineteenth-century America. The exhibit continues through March 2019. Throughout July and August, MHSM will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Additional tours made be scheduled by special arrangement.

Researching Susanna Rowson
Susanna Rowson (1762-1824), an early American best-selling author, ran a girls school in Medford in 1799. Steven Epley, a professor of English at Samford University, is the author of "Susanna Rowson: Sentimental Prophet of Early American Literature," published in 2016. Thanks to a grant from Mass Humanities, the MHSM is hosting Epley as a Scholar In Residence from September 5-25. Jumbo the Elephant: Marvel, Myth, Mascot
The Medford Historical Society & Museum's annual holiday party will feature a talk by guest speaker Andrew McClellan, a professor of Art History at Tufts University. Professor McClellan will share the fascinating story from his book "Jumbo: Marvel, Myth, & Mascot" (2014), on how the carcass of Jumbo the Elephant was a gift to Tufts College in 1889 from founding trustee and benefactor P.T. Barnum and became the most famous college mascot in the United States. Followed by holiday refreshments, and a chance to meet new and greet old friends.

Massachusetts in the Women’s Suffrage Movement
This year marks the centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which granted women the right to vote. It was passed by Congress on June 4, 1919, and adopted on August 18, 1920. Exhibit Opening: Stearns, Shaw, and the Hallowells
The Medford Historical Society & Museum invites you to the opening of its exhibit "Stearns, Shaw, and the Hallowells." The exhibit features MHSM Civil War Collections items, drawing attention to the connections between George Luther Stearns, Robert Gould Shaw, and the Medford Hallowell brothers, Edward and Norwood.
